Red Sand Beach of Kaihalulu

Posted by Beach Lifeguard on 23rd Nov 2014

If you’re interested in visiting one of the most beautiful and unique beaches in the world, you need to visit Kaihalulu Beach, also known as Red Sand Beach. This gorgeous beach can be found just south of Maui’s Hana Bay. The primary draw to this beautiful spot is the red sand found on the shores. The sand get s its color from cinder cone hill located on the northern end of the cove.

In addition to the red sand beaches, you will also see some of the most beautiful ironwood trees in the country. It takes a little bit of determination and work to reach the shores of the beach, but the payoff is definitely worth it. Once you reach the shore, you will be surrounded by the trees, the bright blue ocean, and the black lava sea wall. This scenery will likely leave you awestruck and wondering why you waited so long to make the journey. It is definitely a sight that should not be forgotten, so make sure you bring your camera with you.

Although it is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, the fact that it is partially protected by a reef and has strong currents make the water very dangerous. If you do choose to go into the water, you should be warned that there is often a fast-moving rip current that flows out into the open ocean at the northern end of the beach. It is also highly recommended that you avoid swimming behind the lava sea wall due to extremely strong currents that may make it extremely difficult to swim back to the shore.

While it somewhat of a trek to reach the shore, and the water can be very dangerous; Red Sand Beach is still one of the most beautiful sights to be seen in the world. If you’re planning on visiting the Red Sand Beach, don’t forget to take along your official Lifeguard gear. Just because you shouldn’t go into the water doesn’t mean you can’t look good anyway.
