The Color Purple

Posted by Beach Lifeguard on 19th Oct 2014

Are you interested in visiting one of the most unique beaches around? If so, I have the place for you. Pfeiffer Beach is one of the most breathtaking and naturally beautiful beaches. With its purple sand, yes you read that right, Pfeiffer Beach has purple sand; this is what draws many tourists and residents to the area. You can find this beach by heading to southern California and visiting Los Padres National Forest, specifically the entrance found at mile marker Mon 45.64.

Once you arrive, you will have to walk down a trail to the beach, but trust me the walk is well worth the reward. When you reach the beach you will see some of the most beautiful beach scenery around. One of the most photographed areas of the beach is the Pfeiffer Keyhole rock. This is a beautiful naturally formed rock formation that features a unique hole in the middle. If you visit between December and January, you will be able to view the sun setting directly behind the keyhole. Not only does this make for some awesome photographs, but it is just a beautiful and peaceful experience.

Now, let’s talk about the purple sand. What visitors should know prior to visiting Pfeiffer Beach is that not all of the sand on the beach is purple. The beautifully colored sand can be located along the northern part of the beach. The color comes from manganese garnet that can be found in the hills surrounding the beach. When it erodes it washes down the creek and onto the beach. The color is even stronger and more visible after winter storms.

So if you’re ready to work a little, grab your East Coast Lifeguard Hoodie and head out for a little adventure. I promise you, the views and beauty of this beach make the small walk worth every step. You will experience some of the most exquisite beauty that this planet has to offer at Pfeiffer Beach. This is definitely a trip that should be made at least once in a lifetime; I mean how often can you see purple sand. That alone should convince anyone that the trip should be made.
